3 Steps to a Better Monday!
Do you hate Monday? People sure love to complain about Monday, and in my opinion they have good reason to complain. Monday is often the day I feel most overwhelmed. I’m usually tired from a busy weekend. I’ve put together the impossible ‘To-Do” list for the week. And I’m overwhelmed by it. By mid-morning I’m on my third to fifth cup of coffee. I’m already stressing out. And I’m beginning to think about the golf course. Monday isn’t even half over and I’m feeling defeated. This is not the best way to feel at the beginning of a week.
Years ago while still in the Marine Corps I had one of those defining moments that only come from failure. I was in a training program that required a great deal of physical effort. Usually this wasn’t a problem for me. I was physically fit. In fact, I was in great shape. The night before a particularly tough training schedule I made a mistake. I took a mental short cut. I didn’t drink the water I knew I would need in my body the next day. I thought I would just tough it out. I wanted a good night’s sleep. Big mistake. The next morning, at the end of our normal five mile run along the beach, our trainers added a new element. We did sprints. Uphill sprints. Sprints up a 45 degree incline hill, made almost entirely of sand. The only way to complete the sprint was maximum effort. Full speed ahead. Any slowing down resulted in backward movement. As I remember it, we were to do ten sprints up this hill. I’m told I finished the sprints. I don’t remember it at all. I passed out somewhere between the sand hill and the barracks. Failure brought on by my own mistake. A mistake made the night before. This, for me, is the perfect picture of a Monday.
So, how do we make Monday better? Here’s three suggestions…
1. Start the night before. Don’t wait for Monday morning to begin thinking through your expectations for the day, or the week. Take a few moments just before going to bed on Sunday night to think through the coming day and week. Advanced preparation leads to better execution, always!
2. Set reasonable expectations. It’s easy to put together a completely unreasonable task list for the day. Resist that temptation. Be reasonable. Ask yourself, ahead of time, ‘what can I actually accomplish this Monday?’ And maybe, ‘What do I really need to accomplish this Monday and what can I reschedule for Tuesday, or Thursday?’ Then set your Monday schedule based on these reasonable expectations.
3. Stay aware of yourself. Be aware of how you are feeling physically, emotionally, spiritually. You might need to adjust your schedule and expectations based on how you are feeling. And that’s okay! Mondays are hard. We all know that. And it’s acceptable to make adjustments to deal with your physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. Because if you don’t, then not only will the whole Monday be ruined, but possibly the whole week as well. Stay aware of what’s going on inside you. Make the necessary adjustments.
